Asparagus racemosus (Shatavar, Shatavari, or Shatamull) is a species of asparagus commonly found throughout Sri Lanka, India and the Himalayas. It grows one to two metres tall and prefers to be rooted in gravel, rocky soils, high up in piedmont regions, at 1,300–1,400 metres altitude. It has small pine-needle-like phylloclades (photosynthetic branches) that are uniform and bright green in color. In July, it produces minute, white flowers, and in the month of September it bears fruits, which are blackish-purple colored, globular berries. It has an adventitious root system with tuberous roots that measure about one metre in length, tapering at both ends, with a hundred in number on each plant.
Chemical composition – Contains protein, asparagine, lipids, carbohydrates, phyto-hormones, enzymes, steroidal glycosides, cellulose, mineral salts.
Properties – Depurative, diuretic, liver-lung tonic, stimulates bile, fluidifies the bronchial secretions, stimulates digestion, aphrodisiac, facilitates bowel movement and strengthens the immune system.
