Syzygium aromaticum (Clove, Lavang)

Syzygium aromaticum is an evergreen tree and has a height up to 14 m. Bark of the tree is gray, the leaves are shiny, dark green in color, elliptical in shape and are aromatic. The flowers are small, purple in color and grow in the form of umbrellas, 4-5 clustered at the edge of twigs.
The fruit is a purple drupe 2.5 cm long. Clove tree grows in tropical climates. Cloves are harvested manually, before the opening of buds.

Chemical composition – Contains volatile oil, catechic tannin, flavonoids, 2-methyl benzopyrone (eugenine and other derivatives), fluoroglucinols (eugenone) pentacyclic triterpene acids (betulinic acid, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid), resins, fat, polyphenol, mucilage. The volatile oil is rich in free or esterified eugenol, accompanied by isoeugenol, β-caryophellene, eugenone.
