Cissus quadrangularis

Cissus quadrangularis is a perennial plant of grape family. It is native to India and Sri Lanka, and also found in Africa, Arabia, and Southeast Asia. The plant reaches a height of 1.5m and has branches-Sectional quadrilateral with internodes 8-10 cm long and 1.2-1.5 cm wide. Trilobal toothed leaves are 2-5 cm wide appear at the nodes. Each has a tendril emerging from the opposite node. Racemes of small white flowers, yellow or green. Fruits are globular and become red at maturity.

Chemical composition – Contains alkaloids, resveratrol, piceatannol, pallidol, parthenocissin, quadrangularins, ascorbic acid, carotene, phytosterol substances, calcium, flavinoide, vitamins, enzymes, nicotinic acid, tyrosine, and triterpenoids. Terpenoids components include ketone balsam, amyrin, taraxerol, acetyl taraxerol, friedelin ketone. The main chemical components include tetracyclic triterpenoid, onocer-7-en-3alpha, 21- beta-diol and onocer-7-en-3-beta, 21-alpha-diol and the second principle steroid I and II, α-sitosterol, δ-amyrin. The stem contains two asymmetric tetracyclic triterpenoids and two steroidal principles. It also contains β-sitosterol, δ-amyrin, δ-amiron, flavonoids (quercetin) stilbene derivatives (quadrangularin A, B and C). Other lipids and more phytosterols such as magnesium octadecanoate, heptadecyl, icosanyl icosanoate 4-hydroxy-2-methyltricos-2-en-22-one, 9-methyl-octadec-9-ene, α-amyrin, α-amiron, taraxeryl ethyl, friedelan- 3-one, taraxerol, p-sitosterol isopentacosanoic acid.
