Bauhinia variegata belongs to the family Leguminaceae and is a medium-sized deciduous tree. It is found on rocky hills of the Deccan, and the region of South India. Bauhinia variegata is found to an altitude of 1300 m in the Himalayas reaching a height of up to 15 m. Leaves have minute cluster of flowers, unbranched at the ends of twigs. Few flowers have short stalks, tough and have narrow green stalk like basal narrow tube.

Chemical composition – Contains quercitroside, isoquercitroside and rutoside, myricetol glycosides. Flowers contain kaempferol glycosides; stem containing 5, 7-dihydroxyflavanone-4′-o-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-ß-d-glucopyranoside.

Properties – Prostate protector, laxative, anthelmintic, liver tonic, antidaiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, imunumodulator.
