Azadirachta Indica (Neem) is an evergreen tree that can reach a height of 15-20 meters. The branches are wide, leaves are opposite, pinnate, 20-40 cm long, with 20 to 31 average dark green leaflets about 3-8 cm in length. Petioles are short. The flowers (white and fragrant) are arranged in panicles axillary, more or less, which are up to 25 cm long. The fruit is a smooth drupe (as olive) which varies elongated oval to almost round. Leaves, twigs, seeds and barks are used for therapeutic purpose.
Chemical composition – Contains Nimbin, Nimbidin, nimbidol, gedunin, Sodium nimbinate, queceretin, salannine, Azadirachtine. Seed oil contains fatty acids –oleic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid.
Properties – Anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, antihistaminic, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-ulcer, analgesic, anti-arrythmic, anti-protozoal, vasodilator, diuretic, spermicide, anti-arthritic, strong detoxifier, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, dermoprotective.
