It is an erect, robust annual plant. Stems are sub-quadrangular with thickened nodes. Leaves are oblanceolate. Flowers are pale, blue violet in color, densely clustered in the axils. Fruits are oblong capsules.
Chemical composition – Contains lupeol, stigmasterol, isoflavones glycosides, alkaloids. The seeds contain asterol I-IV, asteracantin, asteracanthicine, amino acid- histidine, lysine and phenyl alanine. Flowers contain glucoaid-0 -7 -apigenin.
Properties – Aphrodisiac, antitumor, antidiabetic, diuretic, urinary tonic, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, stimulates spermatogenesis.
