Solanum xanthocarpum

Solanum xanthocarpum is a thorny plant, has height up to 1.2 meters. Young branches densely covered with minute hair in the form of stars, while at maturity, branches are staggered, covered with yellow, sharp bright spines and spread close to the ground. The flowers are purple in color, 2 cm in length, with five petals, can be seen in small bunches, sometimes opposite to leaves. The plant has drupe globular fruit, pale yellow in color with green veins. The plant is cultivated throughout India.

Chemical composition – Contains solanocarpine, carpesterol, solanocarpidine, potassium nitrate, fatty acid, diosgenin, sitosterol, isochlorogenic acid, neochronogenic acid, chronogenic acid, caffeic acid, solasodine, solasonine, solamargine, quercetine, apigenine, histamine, acetylcholine.

Properties – Anti-asthmatic, hipoglysemic, immunostimulant, digestive, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, anti-tussive, antipyretic, antispasmodic, anti-histamine, hypotensive and cytotoxic.
