Cinnamomum zeylanicum

Cinnamomum zeylanicum is a tree that reaches upto 6-7 m in height. It has oval leaves, deeply ribbed, dark green in color on superior surface and green on interior surface. The bark is smooth and yellowish in color. Both bark and leaves are strongly aromatic. The flowers are small, yellowish-white in color with a disagreeable odor. The fruits are dark purple in color. Cinnamomum zeylanicum prefers humid climate, low altitude. Stems are cut continuously to produce new branches for bark.

Chemical composition – Contains ascorbic, palmitic, p-coumaric acid.
Terpene alpha-pinene, alpha-terpineol, alpha-ylangen, beta-pinene, beta-caryophyllene, limonene, linalool, coumarin glycosides and 3-2-phenyl-propanoic hydroxy acid, casioside, cinamoside and the heterosides derivatives of trimetoxyphenol. Essential oil contains benzaldehyde, eugenol, farnesol, gamma-tripeneol, geranoyl, isoeugeneol, 1,8-cineol, furfural, camphor, tannins, mucilage.
